• You will experience setbacks.
  • You may not get the job.
  • A project may not work.
  • Someone else may get the opportunity you wanted.
  • You may make a mistake that costs you time.
  • You may discover that a role you wanted is not what you expected.

None of these experiences has to define your career.

That does not mean pretending they do not hurt. They can.

Give yourself time to understand what happened. Then investigate.

  • Was there something you could improve?
  • Was the opportunity simply not the right fit?
  • Did you lack evidence in an area?
  • Did you communicate your experience poorly?
  • Was there information you did not have?
  • Not every setback has a lesson you can neatly package.

Sometimes things simply do not work out.

But you can still decide what to do next.

  • Improve the skill.
  • Build the evidence.
  • Ask for feedback where appropriate.
  • Try again.
  • Change direction if the experience revealed something important.

A career is a long journey.

One rejection is one event.

One mistake is one event.

One disappointing role is one chapter.

Do not confuse a setback with a destination.
