It is easy to measure effort by time.
- I worked all day.
- I stayed late.
- I completed ten tickets.
- I wrote thousands of lines of code.
Those numbers can tell you something.
They do not tell you everything.
Professional value is about outcomes.
- Did the problem get solved?
- Did the customer get what they needed?
- Did the system become more reliable?
- Did the team become faster or clearer?
- Did you prevent a problem?
- Did you make a future change easier?
- Sometimes the most valuable contribution takes an hour.
- Sometimes an apparently simple task requires days of investigation.
- Sometimes saying “we should not build this yet” saves weeks of unnecessary work.
That is why professional work cannot be reduced to activity.
You should care about productivity.
But do not confuse being busy with creating value.
Learn to understand what your work enables.
Then focus your effort accordingly.
