Technology changes quickly.
- There will always be another framework.
- Another library.
- Another cloud service.
- Another tool.
- Another concept you have never heard of.
If you believe you need to know everything before becoming a professional, you will always feel behind.
Professionals do not know everything
- Experienced developers get stuck.
- They search documentation.
- They read source code.
- They ask colleagues.
- They create small experiments.
- They look at examples.
- They make mistakes.
- The difference is not that experienced people never get stuck.
- They have developed ways to get unstuck.
Learn how to learn
A useful professional question is:
"How can I find out?"
- You might start with documentation.
- Then search the existing codebase.
- Then reproduce the behaviour.
- Then create a small test.
- Then ask someone who has more context.
The exact process will vary.
The important thing is that you have a process.
Asking for help is a skill
There is a big difference between:
"I cannot do this."
and:
"I have traced the problem to this service. I checked the configuration and reproduced the issue locally. I am unsure whether this behaviour is intentional. Can you help me understand that part?"
The second question shows that you have already taken responsibility for the problem.
You are not asking someone to do the work for you.
You are asking for missing context.
AI changes how you learn
AI can be an excellent learning companion.
- You can ask it to explain an unfamiliar concept.
- You can ask for examples.
- You can compare approaches.
- You can ask it to help you interpret an error.
But use it to increase understanding, not replace it.
If AI gives you a solution, ask yourself whether you understand the solution well enough to explain and maintain it.
Knowing when you need help matters
There is also a danger in trying to solve everything alone.
You can spend six hours investigating something that a teammate could explain in ten minutes.
Professional judgement includes knowing when to continue investigating and when to ask.
The goal is not independence at all costs.
The goal is effective progress.
The lighthouse does not contain every answer
A lighthouse does not tell the ship exactly what to do at every moment.
It provides direction.
- You still read the conditions.
- You still use your instruments.
- You still make decisions.
- You still adjust.
Professional development works the same way.
Guidance helps.
But you need to develop your own ability to navigate.
You do not need to know everything.
You need to become someone who knows how to find out.
