At some point, you will hear advice about specialising.

  • Become an expert.
  • Focus on one area.
  • Go deep.

There is good sense in that.

Depth matters.

But depth without context can become limiting.

  • A backend developer still benefits from understanding users.
  • A frontend developer benefits from understanding APIs and performance.
  • An engineer benefits from understanding the business problem.
  • A technical specialist benefits from understanding how their work affects the rest of the system.

You do not need to become an expert in everything.

That would be impossible.

Instead, think in layers.

Build strong depth in an area where you want to contribute.

Then build enough breadth to understand how that area connects to the larger system.

This makes your specialisation more useful.

You become the person who understands one part deeply while still seeing how the pieces fit together.

That combination can become powerful as your career develops.

The goal is not to choose between depth and breadth forever.

It is to develop both deliberately, at different levels.
