There is a lot of career advice.
- Learn this technology.
- Get this certification.
- Work for this type of company.
- Become a manager.
- Become an architect.
- Start a business.
- Move overseas.
- Stay where you are.
The advice can be contradictory.
That is because careers are personal.
Someone else's success is not automatically your destination
A person may love a particular career path. That does not mean you will.
Someone may thrive in management. You may prefer technical work.
Someone may love consulting. You may prefer building products.
Someone may value a particular technology. You may have different interests.
Their experience is information.
It is not an instruction.
Learn from people without copying them
Good mentors can help you see possibilities.
- They can tell you what they wish they had known.
- They can explain trade-offs.
- They can challenge assumptions.
That is valuable.
But the final decision still needs to fit you.
Know what matters to you
You do not need a perfect philosophical answer.
Start with practical questions.
- What kind of problems do you enjoy?
- Do you prefer deep technical work or frequent collaboration?
- Do you like building new things or improving existing systems?
- Do you want variety or stability?
- What kind of environment helps you do your best work?
- What are you willing to sacrifice?
- What are you not willing to sacrifice?
These questions can help clarify your direction.
Your career is not a competition
Someone else's promotion does not automatically mean you are behind.
Someone else's salary does not tell you whether their career fits you.
Someone else's title does not define your progress.
Your journey has different constraints.
Compare yourself carefully.
Use other people's experiences to learn.
Do not use them to decide your worth.
The lighthouse is yours to use
A lighthouse can be seen by many ships.
Each ship may be travelling somewhere different.
The lighthouse provides the same reference point.
The destinations are not the same.
Your career is yours.
Other people can help you navigate.
Listen to advice.
Learn from experience.
But do not accidentally build a career that belongs to someone else.
