What AI can do?

  • AI can write code.
  • It can explain code.
  • It can generate tests.
  • It can help investigate problems.
  • It can accelerate many parts of software development.

But there is an important question underneath all of this:

Who is responsible for the result?

The answer cannot simply be the AI.

Generating code is not the same as understanding it

You can ask an AI tool to generate an implementation in seconds.

That doesn't mean the implementation is correct.

  • Is it secure?
  • Is it maintainable?
  • Does it actually satisfy the requirement?
  • Does it introduce unnecessary complexity?
  • What happens in production?
  • What assumptions does the code make?
  • Can you explain why the code works?

These questions still matter.

AI changes the workflow

The answer isn't to pretend AI doesn't exist. It does. You should learn how to use it responsibly. AI can help with research, exploration, code generation, debugging ideas, documentation and repetitive tasks. Used well, it can make a capable developer faster. But speed without understanding can create new problems. The faster you generate code you don't understand, the faster you can create a problem you don't understand.

You remain responsible

If AI generates a piece of code and that code causes an issue in production, the client isn't going to ask whether an AI wrote it. The professional who delivered the work still has to understand the outcome. That is why AI should be treated as a tool.

A powerful tool. But still a tool.

You need to remain the captain. You need to understand the requirements, evaluate the output, test the implementation, debug problems and make the final decisions.

The future belongs to people who can work with the tools

AI doesn't remove the need to understand software engineering.

It changes how some of that work is done.

The valuable skill becomes knowing what to ask, what to verify, what to reject and what to improve.

The lighthouse doesn't tell the captain exactly which button to press.

It helps the captain navigate.

AI can do something similar.

But someone still needs to steer the ship.
